A story on CBS 60 Minutes tonight really hit home for me. After a day of celebrating with friends and their young children, I was reminded just how lucky I am to be the mother of a child with access to nutritious food and clean water. Our feast included delicious BBQ chicken and ribs, rice, salad, fruit, cake and ice cream. I watched the children graze freely, to their hearts' delight really, on yummy, healthy food. Something we usually take for granted. 60 Minutes highlighted the fact that children are suffering and dying in developing countries every day from devastating malnutrition. Anderson Cooper, a favorite of mine, reported on the hopeful news that a Ready-To-Use Therapeautic Food (RUTF) called Plumpy Nut is bringing to families in the west African nation of Niger where the severity malnutrition has seemed insurmountable in the past. Thanks to Doctors Without Borders, children are being treated at home for severe and deadly malnutrition which is all too common in Niger and other developing countries around the world. Plumpy Nut is even preventing malnutrition for many babies and young children. The combo of peanut butter, powdered milk, powered sugar, vitamins and minerals is tasty, easy to store and transport and a true miracle food. Anderson Cooper reported that most women in Niger have suffered the loss of at least one of their children to malnutrition and/or starvation. A horrifying thought for a mother in the
land of plenty. I shudder at the mere thought of watching my own child suffer in that way. Therapeutic Foods like Plumpy Nut have the power to make this type of pain and suffering a thing of the past. One way that we like to help provide RUTF's to children in need is by feeding our baby, HappyBaby Premium, Organic Baby Food. Find it in the frozen section at your natural foods store. The little frozen cubes are nothing but pure, nutritious food without chemicals, colorants or preservatives. It is VERY YUMMY! HappyBaby has chosen to support Project Peanut Butter, an organization working to stamp out hunger in Malawi with a therapeautic food product similar to Plumpy Nut.
